MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) -- Former hockey star Rick Tocchet pleaded guilty Friday to running a sports gambling ring, but may not have to serve any jail time.
The longtime player, on leave from his job as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Coyotes, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to promote gambling and promoting gambling. Such offenses usually do not carry a jail sentence for first-time offenders like Tocchet.
Tocchet, 43, is the third man to plead guilty in the case, which New Jersey authorities dubbed "Operation Slapshot.'' The others are expected to get jail time.
While Tocchet, along with uncharged bettor Janet Jones, the wife of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, gave the case its cache, the major arrest for law enforcement was that of State Trooper James Harney.
Harney, who said he was Tocchet's partner in the ring, could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
Prosecutors are recommending a third man, James Ulmer, get six months to a year in jail.
Authorities announced the charges with much fanfare in February 2006. They claimed that in a 40-day stretch that began at the end of 2005 and included college football bowl games and the Super Bowl, the ring handled $1.7 million in wagers.
