By Patriot Ledger staff BRAINTREE - A routine traffic stop ended with the arrest of a Braintree woman on drug and assault charges.
Officer Mark Sherrick was ‘‘overwhelmed’’ by the smell of marijuana when he stopped the driver of a Dodge Caravan on Monday night for running a red light at Washington Street and Union Place, Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins said.
The driver, Lisa A. Kelly, 42, denied having marijuana and refused to get out of the minivan, wrapping her arms around the steering wheel and kicking Sherrick in the chest, Jenkins said.
Sherrick and officer Kenneth Murphy used pepper spray on Kelly and eventually removed her from the vehicle, he said.
A burnt marijuana cigarette and three plastic bags of marijuana were found in the minivan’s center console, Jenkins said.
Kelly was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, marijuana possession, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - a shod foot. She was also cited for failing to stop for a red light.
