Investigators Say Clerk Struggled With Man

Video: Police Seek Public's Help

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Police said a shot was fired during an attempted robbery at a Manchester convenience store Tuesday morning.

Investigators said that just after 7 a.m., two men drove up to Nickles Market on Candia Road in a stolen car, and one entered the store, demanding cash. The clerk struggled with the man, and a gunshot was fired into the floor, police said.

"A man entered the store armed with a handgun and demanded money," Sgt. Maureen Tessier said. "A brief struggle ensued, and a round was discharged."

The clerk said that she offered the man what was in the register, but he demanded that she open the safe. She said she told him she couldn't open it and then tried to get the man out of the store when the gun went off. The man left without any cash.

"According to witnesses, the suspect got into a white vehicle that was operated by another," Tessier said. "The vehicle fled the scene."

Police said the car had been stolen, and it was found abandoned hours later at a condominium parking lot on Eastern Avenue.

The store was shut down for a couple of hours during the investigation. Customers said that it was a shame that the store was targeted.

"It's a great family store," customer Michael Davidson said. "They are competing with the big-box stores. Because of their personality, the way they approach their customers, it's an excellent place to shop."

Police said they aren't sure why the men chose the store to rob, but they said that with all the construction going on in the street, the robbers could easily have been trapped.

"Certainly, at that time of day, it's a busy area," Tessier said. "It's well occupied. Officers are often working traffic details. It's rather brazen."

The man who entered the store was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build. He was wearing dark clothing with a hood, sunglasses, gloves and a mask over his nose and mouth. There was no description available of the driver.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Manchester police at 603-668-8711.
