Lowell police will accept transfers from other departments The Lowell Sun Article Last Updated: 05/21/2007 08:09:52 PM EDT
LOWELL -- City police may begin hiring officers from other departments around the area in what are known as "lateral transfers" in an effort to maintain the department's manpower amid an increase in violent crime, Acting Police Superintendent Kenneth Lavallee said today.
Boston police, under the direction of Lavallee's former boss, Edward Davis, have also recently started accepting such transfers, in which officers can move into the department and maintain their current rank. In fact, Lowell may lose as many as six experienced officers to Boston since Davis began accepting such new hires.
Lavallee and City Manager Bernie Lynch both said accepting the transfers will enable the department to maintain its full complement of 244 officers on the streets, without the delay of waiting for new hires to move through the academy. The change in hiring policy would take effect this summer, though Lynch warned that he still needs to see what the City Council does with his proposed budget before knowing for sure the move will be made.
