NYPD to a Mass Dept.

Hello
I am new here, so I will introduce myself. I have been on the NYPD for three years and want to return to Ma (where I grew up) and continue my police career there.

I took the Civil Service test on 5/19, and would like to hear from anyone else who has done this transfer. Also, if someone could shed light on the process (if there is any exceptions for Current P.O.'s from other states)

Thanks for looking and thanks in advance.

When did you move back to Mass?, because you need to live in a civil service community for a year prior to the exam otherwise you won't qualify for the residency requirement. Basically if you don't have residency in a city or town that's a civil service community you wont have a chance, unless you have disabled vet or veteran status. I would suggest trying for a non-civil service department which doesn't require an exam, just basically an application with your resume and training certificates.

We have an officer on my department that came from NYPD, he was down there for about three years before joining us.

You will also be required to go to the academy again. A guy from my dept just did it a couple of years ago and they didn't accept his NYPD academy. Sorry for the bad news.

Yeah but that was strictly a BPD thing, but MPTC will accept the NYPD academy.

I'm still on the job now, just want to improve my quality of life. Is there a web site that shows non civil service communities?

I'm glad to hear that the MPTC will accept the training , and I would hope that a community would like an experienced officer in there ranks.

It seems though that many towns do not want experienced city cops but would rather spend the money training a new recruit.

NYPD, let us know if it works it for you. I'm hoping to do the same thing you're doing when I retire from LAPD. I've got almost 19 years in now and will be looking to go back to Mass in a few years also. I hope it works for you so you can set a precedent for the rest of us! Good luck.

you could always hang out with us at the DOC ( state prison ) money is good and should be a piece of cake after working in New York.

hang out for a year , get your residency status and then fly the coop like everybody else

good luck in your endeavors and welcome back

Thanks for the advice everyone. It seems that residency is a big part there.

LA, congrats on retirement.
