Dispatcher takes calm command of the frenzy on city's streets

Boston Police 911 dispatcher Brenda Ortiz knew immediately that the officer standing near the corner of Warren and Townsend streets in Roxbury was worried, from the inflection in his voice.
"Four to five shots fired," the Boston School Police officer yelled into his crackling radio.
The officer was huffing as he screamed out his call sign and jumped into his car to follow a suspect in the shooting of a young former high school football star, who was to become the city's 22d homicide victim this year.
He shouted a suspect description at Ortiz, telling her the man had jumped into a white car, perhaps a Toyota, with another man.
"Get me some units up here," the officer said on a tape of the incident played yesterday for the Globe.
Tuesday was a violent night in the city. B6
With her doe-eyes and smile, silk blouse, and fashionable jeans, Ortiz, 29, does not look like someone who routinely orders around dozens of the city's most hardened gang and drug investigators.
But that's exactly what she does.

Hats off to the good dispatchers everywhere. We really couldn't do the job w/out you!

As I recall from memory, it was a Boston cop assigned to the School Police Unit who was on the radio. He was pretty cool & calm considering he was almost on top of the scene.
It's a great pinch but with the Suffolk County DA's fumbeling on the 1 yard line, even this slam dunk could result in an aquittal.
And yes, I wholeheartedly agree the School Police should be armed.

It's wonderful to see someone finally giving kudo's to police dispatchers, but they also should ask how many times Ms. Ortiz has put an officers life in danger over the last 2 1/2 years. BPD Dispatchers are not up to par in their training by any means!!!

Just to clarify, I was working in Area B that night. That was not a "school police officer", but, a Boston Police Officer assigned to the School Unit. So, he is a fully sworn, armed, BPD Police Officer, who on-sited this incident.

And, Brenda did a very nice job that night, keeping us safe.

Boston School Police, I don't think have access to the Boston Police Frequencies on their radios. All though I don't see why they wouldn't since Boston School Police are on UHF. Wait a minute, why would unarmed police need to contact the Boston Police.

Fact that this was a BPD Officer is acknowledged.
