All season, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats have planned to honor Manchester police officer Michael Briggs and retire No. 83 -- his badge number -- before a home game on May 21.
Now the evening at Merchantsauto.com Stadium will also benefit the family of Franconia officer Bruce McKay, killed in the line of duty on Friday. Briggs was killed in October.
The Fisher Cats plan to wear specially designed game jerseys against the Reading Phillies on Monday, and the game-worn uniform tops will be auctioned off for charity.
Proceeds from a ticket fundraiser and the sale of special hats and T-shirts will also benefit the Bruce McKay Family Fund, the Manchester Police Athletic League and Veterans Count -- an Easter Seals' program in cooperation with local military and veterans groups.
"These officers are heroes in every sense of the word," said Fisher Cats President/General Manager Rick Brenner. "It is a privilege to honor these noble men by giving back to the community in their names."
Gov. John Lynch, New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte and Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta are scheduled to participate in the evening's ceremonies along with men and women of the Manchester Police Department.
Navy jerseys with "Manchester" emblazoned across the front and special patches on each shoulder will be worn by the Fisher Cats players. An on-line auction for the jerseys begins this morning at 9 a.m. Online bids at www.nhfishercats.com will be accepted until Monday at 4 p.m.
The silent auction will end at the seventh-inning stretch of Monday's game; winners can claim their jerseys after the game. To buy fundraiser tickets to Officer Briggs' Night, visit www.nhfishercats.com and click on the Manchester Police Department No. 83 badge or call 641-2005.
The first pitch against Reading is set for 6:35 p.m.
