ERVING, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) Erving police say they've arrested one of three people suspected of stealing thousands of dollars worth of copper from a vacant paper mill. For about one month, these alleged copper criminals have been ripping the metal out of the walls and machines in the vacant international paper mill. Their seventh hit on the place turned out to be very unlucky. According to Erving police Chief Chris Blair, at least three suspects have been breaking into the mill up for sale, and have disabled the mill from power and shut the furnaces down; stealing the copper wiring for cash, sometimes pieces of up to 180 feet long.
Finally after surveillance, Montague cops spotted a truck speeding from the mill. That's when one suspect took off on foot and a police pursuit followed with the driver.
43-year-old Kevin Santor of Marlborough, New Hampshire was caught with the copper and arraigned Monday morning at Orange District Court. Two other suspects remain on the run. This morning, Chief Blair took a trip to the scrap metal yard in New Hampshire, where the copper is being sold, looking for answers. “I brought photographs of him and his name and vehicle. He was positively identified at two salvage yards bringing in truck loads of wire. It’s very expensive…this one is $5-6 dollars---its three pounds, I understand we're missing 3,000 feet from the mill, it’s a value of almost $10,000 dollars.”
An electrician estimated the damage done to the vacant mill at $80,000-120,000. Meantime, police say they are hot on the trail of the second suspect, believed to be Kevin Santor's roommate.
