NEW BEDFORD — A female police officer was punched in the face and another officer suffered a minor wrist injury Thursday while trying to arrest four men driving a stolen car.
Around 7:08 p.m. Thursday, police tracked a stolen 1993 black Dodge Avenger to the Tedeschi Food Mart parking lot at 951 Brock Ave. Three men were inside the vehicle, and a fourth was inside the store.
Officer Jason Molleo instructed one man to exit the car, but the man ran when Officer Molleo tried to handcuff him. Officers Molleo and Roberto Decunha chased him and struggled to subdue him.
Around this time, a crowd formed on Brock Avenue. Police said some of the people had just come from a nearby candlelight vigil for Sherry Calheta, a New Bedford woman who was killed May 6 at West Island Town Beach in Fairhaven.
A man in the crowd, James Cheshire, 17, of 8 Roosevelt St., allegedly tried to interfere with police. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Kenneth Slashwest, 17, of 22 Ashley St., allegedly punched Police Officer Macaila Saunders, who responded to the scene. Officer Saunders did not suffer any serious injuries.
During the struggle with Mr. Slashwest, Officer Molleo suffered an abrasion on his wrist, and was treated and released at St. Luke's Hospital.
Mr. Slashwest was charged with three counts of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Police also arrested and charged with possessing a stolen motor vehicle: Derek Brown, 40, of 125 Fruit St., James West, 45, of 22 Ashley St., and Kristopher Dries, 17, of 18 Roosevelt St.
