BOSTON — A 24-year-old Taunton man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on weapons and narcotics violations.
Dan Smith of 227 Washington Street, 2nd floor, is charged in an indictment with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (crack cocaine). He and three others were arrested in Taunton on Dec. 28, 2006.
The federal felon-in-possession statute prohibits any person who is convicted of a felony from possessing a firearm and ammunition. Upon conviction, the felon-in- possession charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Taunton Police. Bristol County District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter referred the case for federal prosecution as part of President Bush's Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, which makes prosecution of firearms cases a priority.
The goal of the investigations is to reduce firearm-related activity and the number of guns available on the streets of Taunton and to reduce gang violence in the Taunton area.
According to Taunton Enterprise files, Smith and Eric Pollard, 17, and Jason Pollard, 18, both of 10 Kelly St. and Jillian Richards, 22, of 200 Whittenton St., were charged with trafficking in a Class B substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act. The firearm was a .45 caliber handgun stolen from Sandwich.
Smith is in state custody and will be brought into federal court soon.
I find it hard to believe that this sort of nonsense goes on in sparkling Taunton.
