PEMBROKE - Police arrested a Marshfield man at his Pembroke office and charged him with possessing child pornography.

Police say Amerigo Verni, 44, of 138 Grandview Ave., Marshfield, was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, after they searched his office at 251 Washington St., and found the material.

Verni was arraigned Friday at Plymouth District Court and released on $500 bail. He will return to court July 11 for a pretrial hearing. The district attorney requested $2,500 bail, a spokeswoman said.

Verni owns the building on Washington street where. R.M. Verni Sales Co. is located. He bought the building in January 2006. The company, a manufacturers’ representative agency serving the woodworking industry, is located in the front of the building.

The building is also occupied by another company and a family.

Laura Aiken, who has lived in the building for a year with her four children, ages 8 to 16, said she never noticed anything strange about her landlord. ‘‘He’s a nice guy,’’ she said. ‘‘A good, up-front guy.’’

She said she gets the mail nearly every day and believes the arrest was an accident. ‘‘No funny packages, it’s straight-up work mail,’’ she said. ‘‘I think it’s probably something that came by accident. I think it was a mess-up.’’

Verni could not be reached for comment.

Pembroke Police Chief Willard Boulter Jr. said his officers assisted the U.S. Postal Service and State Police with the search warrant, then made the arrest. He said the investigation is ongoing.

Marshfield police said Verni has no record in town, other than a speeding violation.

‘‘The officers that were up there last night saw the pornography that was delivered there by the postal service,’’ Boulter said. ‘‘They arrested the guy for possessing it.’’
