BPD Commissioner Edward Davis said six new homicide detectives will begin working today, part of an effort to bolster the city’s abysmally low clearance rate in murder cases.
Already this year, 20 victims have fallen on city streets, with arrests in just six of those murder cases, according to a Herald review of the killings.
“This latest move signifies the department’s ongoing commitment to solving homicide cases in the city of Boston,” Davis said in a statement last night.
The detectives will attack not just current homicide investigations, but a backlog of cold cases, Davis said.
The new investigators will hit the streets a day before the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute holds its annual Mothers Walk for Peace. The event was begun by Tina Chery in 1997, after she lost her 15-year-old son Louis to a gangbanger’s bullet. Walkers will meet at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at Town Field in Fields Corner, Dorchester.
The event is in memory of those lost to murder and a reminder that justice needs to be served, organizers said.
