SALEM, N.H. -- A Massachusetts woman is facing drug charges after a pawnshop owner became suspicious last week when she tried to pawn a $25,000 engagement ring.
Police said that the owner of Cash For Gold in Salem became suspicious when Lindsey Godfrey, 26, of Methuen, Mass., walked into the store and said she wanted to pawn the 3-carat ring.
"He wasn't comfortable with someone who walked in off the street and tried to pawn this ring reportedly worth $25,000," Deputy Chief Bill Ganley said. "He felt it might have been stolen."
Police questioned Godfrey, who told them the ring was hers. But the officers became suspicious and asked to search her.
"In the course of chatting with her, they asked for permission to search, and she granted it, and some drugs were found," Ganley said.
Ganley said officers found a crack pipe and methadone. Godfrey was arrested, and police continued investigating the ring, which turned out not to be stolen.
"It wasn't stolen," Ganley said. "It was her fiance's ring, and there was some discussion over who had the right to have it."
Police said the ring was returned to the fiance. Ganley said that Godfrey could try to get the ring back in civil court.
Godfrey was released on bail and is scheduled to return to court next month.
