BRAINTREE - Police are hoping surveillance video and fingerprints will lead them to the man who broke into an Adams Street home.

A neighbor told police that a heavy-set man, in his late teens, dressed in black, knocked on the door of the home at about 7:50 a.m. Wednesday about five minutes after the couple living there had gone out.

The couple returned in the afternoon and found the house had been ransacked. It could not be determined if anything was missing.

‘‘Detectives identified numerous items that had been handled and may yield fingerprint evidence,’’ Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins said.

The man who was at the door was seen walking from the direction of the Elm Street Mobile gas station, and Jenkins said video surveillance recordings will be reviewed to see if he shows up on them.

A lawn chair was placed under a rear window, the point of entry in the break-in.

Police have asked that anyone with information that could help their investigation to call Detective David Clark at 781-794-8988.
