I've been contacted by Las Vegas Metro P.D. and asked to pass along this info to highly qualified candidates:

I would like to let you know about the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police
>Department and our active nationwide recruitment efforts. Las Vegas is
>experiencing record growth and we are attempting to keep up with it. We
>are hiring approximately 400-500 police officers a year for the next 10
>years. We are also looking for 160 corrections officers by the end of
>2007 and have approximately 74 different job classifications for
>civilians available as well.
>
>LVMPD is a fairly large police department and is also one of Southern
>Nevada's largest employers. LVMPD has over 2300 police officers, 725
>corrections officers, and approximately 1625 civilian employees. We are
>responsible for all of Clark County, which encompasses approximately
>8000 square miles.
>
>There is tremendous career opportunity for the following positions with
>the LVMPD: Police Recruit, Corrections Recruit, Law Enforcement Support
>Technician, and Dispatch Specialist Trainee. We are also hiring for
>numerous positions in the fields of Information Technology and Forensic
>Science. In addition, once hired by LVMPD, there are numerous
>opportunities for lateral movement and promotion available for all
>employees as well.
>
>We will be conducting numerous testing processes for the above
>positions in the next year. For Police and Corrections Recruit,
>applications are always available. For the other positions, although we
>test frequently, we need interested persons to submit an Interest Card,
>and we will notify them when we are accepting applications. We are very
>dedicated in our objective to hire only the most qualified individuals
>through a strong commitment to our hiring standards.
>
>The LVMPD is an equal opportunity employer. All appointments to the
>competitive service shall be made without regard to race, color,
>religion, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, national origin,
>veteran status, or political affiliation, and shall be based on merit
>and fitness only. The LVMPD is accredited by the Commission on
>Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
>
>We would encourage anyone interested to check out our website(s)
>www.protectthecity.com or www.lvmpd.com . Job qualifications and
>experience requirements vary for each position and are posted in the job
>description(s) listed on our website(s). They can even apply on line,
>while visiting the website(s). I have attached our current job postings
>for Police Officer and Corrections Officer, so you have an example of
>our job announcements.
>

"We are very dedicated in our objective to hire only the most qualified individuals through a strong commitment to our hiring standards."

That sentence sums up the high reputation of Las Vegas Metro. Unless you have an immaculate background, are in excellent health, and can pass the polygraph, save your time and plane fare.
I sent a very strong candidate out there on my recommendation to one of their detectives. He couldn't pass the eye exam because of a very minor myopic condition and had to come home.
It's a very professional organization with a lot of upside but as stated, if you can't meet their standards...try elsewhere. IMHO

I'll pass along to all the info. I just passed on in a PM to another. If you are qualified and looking for a job outside New England you may want to look southward. I know Savannah-Chatham Metro Police is looking. Check out their website. If you want to stay in NE come up north. Growing towns up in Vt, Maine and NH (especially NH) are constantly looking for officers. Oh...and yes many departments demand well-qualified applicants and there is nothing wrong with that.
