Police Say Victim Was Wearing Sweatshirt Of Rival Gang

Video: Victim's Mother Speaks In Court

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A member of the Outlaws motorcycle club was sentenced Thursday to 45 to 90 years in prison for shooting and killing a man who was wearing a rival gang's shirt.

Christopher Legere, 37, was convicted on two alternate counts of second-degree murder in February after killing John Denoncourt, 32. Police said Legere shot Denoncourt on June 25, 2006, for trying to enter an Outlaws hangout while wearing a Hells Angels sweatshirt.

Legere's girlfriend worked as a bartender at Three Cousins Pizza and Lounge. Witnesses said two people tried to persuade Denoncourt to turn his sweatshirt inside out, but he refused. Legere then rushed outside, pulled out a handgun and fired three shots in his direction, according to accounts at trial.

Authorities have said Legere was head of security for the southern New Hampshire Outlaws and that his home in Raymond served as the gang's clubhouse. He also has an extensive criminal record.

Hillsborough County Superior Judge Kathleen McGuire agreed with the sentence recommended by prosecutors.

"The sentence today sends a strong message that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated in this state," Senior Assistant Attorney General William Delker said after the hearing.

Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge Kathleen A. McGuire accepted the state's recommendation that Legere, 37, serve 45 years to life for knowingly killing John Denoncourt, 32, outside Three Cousins Pizza last June 25.
A jury found Legere, who formerly lived at the Outlaws Motorcycle Club headquarters in Raymond, guilty of alternate counts of second-degree murder Feb. 16.

"The sentence today sends a strong message that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated in this state," Senior Assistant Attorney General N. William Delker said after the hearing. He said he asked for the tough sentence given the gang-related nature of the killing and Legere’s lengthy criminal history
