Main Page VT National Guard Leader Says Iraq Weakening Homefront Role

When disasters like flooding or ice storms strike, the Vermont National Guard responds.

Vital equipment is used during state emergencies. Much of the same equipment used in the Iraq War.

"Do we have concerns? Yes we do," said Colonel Jon Farnham, of the Vt. National Guard.

Now inventory is down in every state. It's been called a national epidemic.

"You name it, we are short," said National Guard Bureau Chief Lt. Steven Blum. "I'm talking about dozers, graders, loaders, dump trucks."

Col. Farnham says the Vermont Guard's inventory now stands at about 50 percent. The biggest shortages are in military vehicles and tents, which are used for emergency shelter.

We counted more than a dozen humvees and hemtt trucks on site at Camp Johnson in Colchester.

"Some equipment is in war-zone and some is being retrofitted. Some is lost permanently," said. Col. Farnham.

It's battle damaged or simply worn out.

The equipment shortage fuels concerns that the National Guard will be slow to respond to emergencies at the national level.

"The lack of equipment makes it take longer to do that job and lost time translates into lost lives. Those lost lives are American lives," said Lt. Blum.

Ahhh.. what happened to keeping business in house? Going around his superiors and straight to the media? Probably not a wise career move, the Col. has no discipline.

Not to mention letting the bad guys (both at home and overseas)know what resources we have and don't have available.

Why don't we just keep all the NG equipment in storage right here on base in case we need it one week a year? Yeah, let it rot in place while we're fighting a war overseas. That's the right thing to do. This guy's a dope.

If this were WW2 and this asshat let his feelings be known in the same way, he'd end up in a mental institution for the duration of the war. Not a bad idea if you ask me. Throw some of the esteemed New York Times & Wall Street Journal reporters in there too for helping the enemy and giving our NSA secrets.
