PD earns an ‘A’ from state board

Review cites town’s compliance

HOLDEN— The Police Department has been re-certified for another three years by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, a status attained by only 16 police departments in the state.

Donna Taylor Mooers, executive director of the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, told selectmen Monday night that the department had achieved the honor by choosing to comply with 151 professional standards set by the accreditation commission.

The Police Department was first certified in 2004 for three years, and was inspected and assessed starting in the fall of this year for re-certification for another three years.

The assessment team toured the Police Department, then spent many hours at the Holden Senior Center, where police officers brought requested information to be examined. There is not enough room at the police station for the assessment team to conduct its evaluation, Ms. Mooers told selectmen, commenting on the department’s willingness to carry information back and forth from the police station to the Senior Center.

She described the certification process as a willingness to have the department’s entire operation laid bare for the evaluation team so they could determine whether the department has developed and adhered to professional policies and procedures, as required for certification.

In addition to helping a police department attain high professional standards and develop operational standards, certification lowers a police department’s liability, said Ms. Mooers.

Among categories on which the department was evaluated are: evidence collection and preservation, record keeping, training and career development, fiscal management, administration and discipline.

Lt. Donald A. Ball is accreditation manager for the department, spending many hours maintaining written policies and procedures and keeping records to demonstrate that the department is complying with the 151 standards, according to Police Chief George R. Sherrill.

The Accreditation Council offers two voluntary assessments of police departments, certification and accreditation. Accreditation requires more modern, spacious facilities than the Holden police station has, Ms. Mooers said last fall.

The other 15 police departments that are certified are Barnstable, Brewster, Burlington, Chelsea, Concord, Easton, Fall River, Groveland, Northeastern University, Oak Bluffs, Reading, Somerset, Uxbridge, Wenham and Westfield State College.

Congratulations!!

Even the Accreditation Council has a problem with their station.

Nice to see a state college on that list.

Yup, and if your dept wants to be "accredited", your stack of SOP manuals goes from 17 to about 1700. Nice reading material for the hopper.

Word, except if you're accredited and on the hopper you must abide by the allotted drops and use the allotted squares.. The only thing accreditation is good for is the requirement to keep equipment new and up to date..

The only good thing about accreditation is for management as it is a major feather in their cap for getting it.
