Woman Crashes Into Supermarket, Runs Over Son

AUSTIN, Tx. Shoppers in an Austin supermarket ran for cover when a car driven by an elderly woman came crashing through the front doors—injuring three people, including the driver’s son.

Authorities don't know why the woman drove into the Randall's grocery store.

Dan Schuhmacher was among the shoppers inside the Austin-area store Tuesday. He was sent scrambling for cover.

"Everybody was checking to see who was there, and then someone discovered someone was under the car,” Schuhmacher said. “It turns out it was the lady's son who she was coming to pick up."

He did what he could to help the woman behind the wheel and the man under her car.

“She tried to move the car and I stopped her,” Schuhmacher said. “I told her not to move the car because she went forward over her son again. I took the keys and her purse."

Just a few doors down at a different store, deli worker Zach Settles rushed to help.

"The woman was inside of her car and was almost hysterical,” Settles said. “She didn't know what to do when she was in there. We had to tell her to turn her car off and back it up a little bit so we could get her son out from under it."

Three people including the driver's son were taken to area hospitals.

"It could have been much worse," said Warren Hassinger with Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

Emergency workers say no one was seriously hurt.

"It looks bad,” Hassinger said. “There's a lot of glass and broken framework."

Crews hauled away the twisted metal and swept up the shards of broken glass left behind.

"When I went up to start clearing glass, books and stuff, I saw blood all over the floor," Schuhmacher said.

The injured include a customer who was struck by a flying display case, and a worker at the store who suffered an anxiety attack.

Emergency workers say the driver of the car was shaken up by the incident, but will be OK.
