BOSTON -- The FBI has issued a warning for all computer users.
NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported Tuesday that someone is sending frightening e-mails. The sender threatens to send a hit man after the person to kill them if you don't pay up. The sender said that you're being watched, and they know where they live.
Peter McGlothin, of Boston, received one of the e-mails and said the sender promised to spare his life if he paid $30,000.
"'I'm very, very sorry for you. It is a pity that this is how your life is going to end. It’s a pity. I will give you some chances to help yourself if you'd like to,'" he read from the e-mail. "'My work as I am talking to you now is just to kill you and I have to do it just as I have already been paid for that.' It also says: 'We have been watching you.' 'We have photos of you.' 'We know where you are.' 'We know where you live.'"
The FBI has received 115 similar complaints.
"They're trying to play on people's fears, to have them provide information about themselves that they wouldn't normally provide," said Sharon Ormsby, FBI assistant agent in charge.
The scam is similar to the more familiar Nigerian Letter Scheme. Officials said that responding in any way opens the door to all kinds of fraud.
"Personal data for later possible identity theft or maybe bank card information or bank account information to then extract the funds they are looking for," said Ormsby said.
If anyone receives one of the extortion e-mails, they should contact the FBI, delete it and update the anti-spam software on their computer.
