Officers lead Paul Broussard to a waiting ambulance Friday after he surrendered to police following a standoff in Scott.
SCOTT,LA - A Scott Police Department officer sustained minor injuries Friday evening after being shot while responding to a disturbance at a mobile home park. The incident began around 4:30 p.m. Friday at Landall Mobile Estates on West Willow Street, said Louisiana State Police TFC David Anderson, when Scott officers were called to a disturbance between a resident and his landlord. Anderson said when officers arrived, the resident, Paul Broussard, was holding a semiautomatic rifle. Officers issued loud verbal commands for Broussard to put down the weapon, but Broussard refused, Anderson said. Shots were then fired between Broussard and one of the officers, Anderson said. The officer sustained a minor injury to his arm.
Shortly after the shooting, Broussard retreated into his mobile home and barricaded himself inside. Just after 5:30 p.m., a local television videographer was allowed to accompany authorities as they neared Broussard's residence and negotiated with him. Broussard reportedly wanted someone from the television station present before surrendering. Just before 6 p.m., Broussard was taken into custody by state police. Authorities helped Broussard into a waiting ambulance, which took him from the scene. It was unclear how badly Broussard was injured, although he was able to enter the ambulance with only minor assistance. Anderson said it was unclear what initially sparked the dispute between Broussard and his landlord. Broussard is the founding member of the Lafayette-area chapter of Radio Emergency Associated Communications Teams, also known as R.E.A.C.T. His business card identifies him as director of intelligence for R.E.A.C.T. Emergency Services. Broussard also was a candidate for Scott police chief in 2002, according to a previous Advertiser article. In that article, Broussard said if elected, he would fire all 16 officers in the Scott Police Department, including its three dispatchers. During the standoff, West Willow Street between Debonnaire Road and Mills Street was blocked off, and some of the mobile home park's residents were evacuated briefly. State police, the Scott Police Department, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and Acadian Ambulance responded to the scene.
Shooting of officers The incident marks the third time this year a local law enforcement agent has been shot in the line of duty. In late March, state Trooper Frank Garcia was shot during a traffic stop on Interstate 10, and in early April, a Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office deputy was shot while responding to a minor traffic accident. None of the injuries was life-threatening.
