An old new idea is popping up in areas across the country and may be worth looking at for increased police visibility in some of our communities. The idea is to downsize some of our motor patrols.
In the past (and presently in some departments) motor scooters, trail bikes and even golf carts were utilized in an effort to move officers quickly through tight spaces or rough terrain. Hampton and other police departments use ATV's on the beach. NYPD has used scooters in projects.
The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police in Georgia has started using two new vehicles in an effort to bring officer more quickly to scenes and patrol narrow alleys. In the past several months Piaggio Scooters were broken out to move officers through crowds at the annual St. Patrick's celebration on River Street. This week the Metro cops brought out their newest tool, Police Escort/300's. These units will be used in residential areas where narrow alleys etc. which are difficult for cruisers to reach. The reported cost ($4,000) is a strong plus in shrinking budgets.
While the Harley units certainly are great for highway enforcement, and patrol bicycles have proven effective in many communities, is it time to look at these as law enforcement adapts to new challenges?
