WALES— Selectmen voted unanimously in a special meeting last night to appoint Cpl. Dawn M. Charette as the new police chief, effective May 31.
She will replace Richard S. Ullery, 74, who is retiring May 31 after serving 35 years on the Police Department and 25 years as chief.
According to Chief Ullery, Cpl. Charette is the first woman to become police chief in Wales. He said last night in a telephone interview that her appointment is wonderful news and that “she really deserves it.”
The appointment came at the special meeting to interview candidates for the post.
Cpl. Jeffrey Hastings and Officer William S. Sutcliffe also applied for the job. While Cpl. Charette and Officer Sutcliffe reside in Wales, Cpl. Hastings is a Brimfield resident.
Cpl. Charette, 40, became a member of the Wales department in June 2000. She was promoted to corporal in 2002. In February 2006, she became a certified RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) instructor and is a founding member of the Tri-Town Domestic Violence Task Force in Brimfield, Holland and Wales. For the past four years, she has also been a member of the Brimfield Police Department.
During the interview process, Cpl. Charette told selectmen she believes she is best qualified for the position because she has come to know the residents of Wales very well over her seven years on the police force.
“Further, I believe I have gained their trust through exemplary police work, and have fostered a relationship based upon fairness and compassion. I believe I have served with honor and distinction,” Cpl. Charette said.
Selectman Robert K. Marchand said that while he felt both Cpl. Charette and Cpl. Hastings were qualified for the position, he agreed with Cpl. Charette’s statement and voted for her, “because a lot of people have come to my store and have expressed the fact that they like Dawn because she’s in the community all the time and they’re very familiar with her.”
Stating he’d like the chief to be somebody who lives in Wales, board Chairman Eric H. Esiason agreed with Mr. Marchand and voted for Cpl. Charette.
“She is a strong candidate (and) will be here forever and (she) understands the part-time nature of Wales,” Mr. Esiason said. “We’re a very small town with an appropriately corresponding police force. … I think Dawn will do a fine job. ... I hope everyone will give Dawn the full support that she needs.”
Selectman Jeffrey P. Vannais concurred, making the choice unanimous.
