Death penalty for vicious dogs!!! Any dog or animal for that matter who has attacked a person or who has bit a child should be put down. Pit Bulls, German Shepard's, Poodles, Huskies, Hot Dogs, Rat Dogs, Shit on U's or what ever they are called ect....
The only Pit Bull I ever liked was Pete from the Little Rascals.... I though Spud from the bud commercials was a Pit Bull however found out he was an English Bull Terrior which are wonderful dogs for a family

I don't think Pit Bulls need a law of their own, but I loved Tom Hanks in that movie "A League of Their Own."

You're right, Spuds is a Bull Terrier..."pitbulls" consit of the following breads: Staffordshire Bull Terrier's, American Staffordshire Terrier's...There are no true "pitbulls"....! They were all bred from Boxers, Mastiff's and (obviously) terriers....pitbulls is just a term....not a real breed. Although, American Pitbull Terrier's are recognized but they are the above mentioned breed...here is a portion of the breed standard (these dogs must have this to be proper to the breed):

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog. Gentle and loving towards people. Good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet. It is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, this dog wants nothing more then to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of life. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced this friendly, trustworthy, dog who is an especially good dog for children.

Plain and simple. These dogs are victimized as much as Rotties and Dobermans were in the 90's.

I'm done with my rant for at least another few months.

My sister used to raise them, she had the sweetest female going - even when she was nursing the pups.

The hysterical town she lived in, was another story.

Every single time a black dog was loose in the area the animal control officer had to come down, sheepishly apologize to my sister for bothering her AGAIN, but had to do his bit of PR and check on her.

After her male mysteriously got out of thier sealed kennel, and killed by a neighbor who just 'happened' to be home this particular day, her female was quarantined at the animal control office.

When a reporter for the town rag came to interview him about the vicious pit bull, he let her out into the office, to play with the reporter. At the end of the interview, he introduced the dog to the reporter as the vicious beast she came to report on.

Indiana Officer Saves Man from Dog Attack

KOKOMO, Ind. --
A man credited a quick-acting, straight-shooting police officer for saving his life during a pit bull attack over the weekend.
Steve Shallenberger and his girlfriend, Tiffany Anderson, said he was moments away from being mauled to death just after 7 a.m. Saturday, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.
Anderson said the couple woke up to the sound of a dog howling and barking. Shallenberger said he went to get the dog, which he said was acting friendly, out of the middle of the street.
"He came over there peaceful and we looked at his collar," Shallenberger said. "My neighbor had already called police."
When 13-year veteran Kokomo police Officer Rich Benzinger arrived, the 120-pound pit bull was still calm and wagging his tail, but Benzinger said that changed in an instant when they tried to put the dog in the back seat of the officer's car.
"As soon as that door opened up, that dog just went berserk," Shallenberger said.
"His life was definitely in danger. When that dog latched on, it was obvious that it wasn't letting go," Benzinger said.
All three said they thought the dog was about to go for Shallenberger's face and throat. A dog lover himself, Benzinger made a split-second decision, drew his gun and shot the dog in the head.
"I thought, 'Oh my gosh!' because you want him to shoot the dog, but Steve and the dog were so close together -- entwined," Anderson said. "I'm very thankful for Officer Benzinger shooting that do. He really probably saved Steve's life."
The dog did not die immediately but was later euthanized. It will be tested for rabies, police said.
Surgery repaired a chipped bone, torn tendons and deep lacerations, but Shallenberger faces a long recovery -- 12 weeks of missed work.
"I'm just thankful that it was my hand and not a major artery or a child that felt the wrath of this dog," Shallenberger said.
The dog's owner, neighbor Michael Conner, arrived after the dog was killed. According to a police report, he was drunk and swore at officers.
Conner faces charges of harboring a non-immunized dog, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Deputies find 7-yr.-old dead on Texas roadside

2 nearby pit bulls shot

ABILENE, Texas--A 7-year-old boy died after he was apparently attacked by two pit bulls along a central Texas road, and deputies summoned to the scene had to shoot the dogs before they could reach him, authorities said.
A driver saw Tanner Joshua Monk lying beside a road near Breckenridge on Sunday with two dogs nearby, Stephens County Sheriff Jim Reeves said. She got out of the car to help him, but the dogs became aggressive so she called authorities, he said.
Two sheriff's deputies who came to the scene shot the dogs to death when they also became aggressive toward them. The deputies found that Tanner was dead, Reeves said in Monday's edition of the Abilene Reporter-News.
The two pit bulls, along with two others seized by law enforcement, belonged to a neighbor of the child's family, Reeves said.
No one was arrested Sunday. Reeves said evidence probably will be presented to a grand jury following an autopsy on the boy and tests on the dogs that were killed. Apparently no one saw what happened on the road.

Netherlands Will Lift Ban on Pit Bulls, Saying No Decrease in Bites

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — The Dutch government says it will lift a long-standing ban on pit bulls because it did not lead to any decrease in bite incidents.

Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has informed parliament of the decision, which follows the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy.

Instead, the country will focus on enforcing local leashing laws and owner education programs.

Spokesman Koen Geelink said Monday the ministry hopes to have a new policy in place by year-end, in which dogs that have displayed aggression will be tested by an expert.

The country banned the breeding and possession of pit bulls in 1993, after three children were killed by the dogs.

Wow this thread is 41 pages long....and there are some pretty strong opinions on both sides...and while I admit I agree with many of you on many things...
I AM AN AMERICAN PITBULL OWNER.
Believe what you like, and we can all agree to disagree. I know that in the 7 years I have owned my dog Otis, or as my kids call him the "weasel" (because he's a cookie thief), whose pedigree includes one of the winningest dog fighters in pit bull history, he has never been in a dog fight nor bit a single person. He barks at my postman, who loves him dearly by the way, in a playful way everyday.
There are a million misconceptions about this breed, as there were about shepards and rotties several years ago. The biggest problem I personally think is the press. While we all agree that you can't believe all they say when it is in referance to police work, because they omit facts, screw up details, never get both sides etc., you're awful quick to swallow all they put out about pitbulls. I have personally been to dog fight calls, dog bites vs. people etc and had reporters calling mutt dogs pitbulls in the paper the next day that plainly weren't pitbulls either because they were too lazy to ask, were misinformed, whatever...and then people read the articles and panic about these dogs. Notice the common theme amongst the articles....owner not around, DRUNK, or SHITHEADS who probably treat their kids as poorly as their family pets...the dogs are unlicensed, unvaccinated, unattended, mistreated....and taking all that into account remembering they're animals.....ANY BREED would act like that I think. Human beings are the meanest, vile, most viscious breed on this planet...should we be banning our breed?? I know I love my dog. My wife/kids/mother/GRANDMOTHER!!!...lol../bulldog/cats love him to death. But he is an animal and I respect that from him. The problem is people don't and then these tragedies happen. And while I agree to the tragedies...we shouldn't be so quick to play God and wipe out a breed.
Just my .02....
Never figured I'd see Masscops members forming Frankenstein lynch mobs over dogs....lol...but stranger things have happened I guess.

Pit-Bull Mastiff Kills Terrier In Bar

Dog's Owner Faces Civil Charge

BAR HARBOR, Maine -- Police said a pit-bull mastiff attacked a terrier sitting on its owner's lap in the courtyard of a Bar Harbor tavern and killed it, resulting in civil charges against the larger dog's owner.

Jennifer Neuman faces a civil charge of keeping a dangerous dog following the incident early Friday at the Dog and Pony Tavern, which has a courtyard where people can bring dogs.

Police said Neuman's leashed dog, Tank, snapped up a Yorkshire terrier named Yoda as it sat on its owner's lap and took off. Bystanders got the smaller dog free but it died before they could get it to a veterinarian.
Neuman, who's 23 and is living in Bar Harbor for the summer, is to appear in Ellsworth District Court Sept. 2.

5-year-old boy killed by pit bull in Texas

WESLACO, Texas -- A pit bull fatally mauled a 5-year-old boy staying at a southern Texas home with relatives, authorities said.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday. Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Trevino said the condition of the child's body suggested there was no way emergency responders could have saved his life.
Authorities were trying to determine whether the dog had been confined and how it came in contact with the boy, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said.
Trevino declined to identify the boy pending notification of his mother, who lives in Washington state. The boy's father lives in Mexico.
The sheriff said the boy had been living in the house north of Weslaco with his aunt and uncle after Child Protective Services placed him with them.
Luis Palomo, 20, said he was down the street playing football with friends when the trouble began. He said the victim was at home with a baby sitter when one of two pit bulls at the house began running around the front yard, getting a second pit bull inside the home riled up.
Palomo said the baby sitter and boy were inside the house with the second dog and were scared, so he tried to intervene. While he managed to distract the dogs temporarily, the boy wandered out the back door. One of the dogs grabbed the boy by the torso and dragged him, locking its jaws around the boy's neck, Palomo said.

Wareham police shoot pit bull during search

WAREHAM — A pit bull was fatally shot after police were confronted by the dog while executing a search warrant at 298 Onset Ave. on Wednesday, Chief Thomas Joyce said Thursday night.
According to police reports, officers and detectives from the Police Department and members of the Drug Enforcement Administration Cape Cod Task Force, entered the building just before 6 p.m. and encountered a pit bull in the doorway.
The dog was "growling and acting in an aggressive manner," the report said, so an officer used a Taser in an attempt to make it back off.
"The dog retreated approximately 6 inches and then charged at the entry team growling and showing his teeth," the report said.
According to Lieutenant Irving I. Wallace, two search warrants had been issued, one for the owner of the dog and the other for the residence. The dog's owner was detained outside of the house when police entered the residence and encountered the dog.
"Unfortunately, at this point the officers feared for their safety and the dog had to be put down," according to the report. Chief Joyce said the dog was shot once by an unidentified officer.
According to police, a search of the premises netted several items often used in packaging drugs, but no illegal drugs were discovered, and no arrests were made.
Lt. Wallace said the last incident of a dog shooting during a raid he remembers in Wareham took place in 1989 or 1990. That dog survived.

Pit Bull Attacks Woman as She Disciplines Child

BLANCHARD, La. — A woman disciplining a child for breaking a glass was attacked by her boyfriend's pit bull.

Caddo Parish sheriff's deputies say the woman stabbed the dog, and two neighbors alerted to the commotion helped subdue the animal by beating it with a pipe and a board.
Deputies say the dog will be euthanized because of the viciousness of the attack and the extent of its wounds.
Caddo sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said 27-year-old Kathryn Long suffered severe dog bites to her arm and buttocks and had to be hospitalized.
The incident happened Tuesday at a home just outside of Blanchard.

Sounds like the pup was protecting the child.

Posted by: HostL_EndvR118

Its is the same with any dog that may have a good relationship with a child, it cant be blamed solely on the fact that it was a pitbull. When I was a kid I had a golden retriever that would bite to defend me, same with my cousins standard poodle, I got bit by that thing when we were fighting about something when we were young.
If this "disciplining" in this situation was physical, the kid was probably crying and showing signs of duress, and that would only make it more likely that the dog would attack to defend a person towards whom the animal felt a certain amount of loyalty.
I agree completely with the idea of being required to possess a permit for the animal. What would really mitigate the occurance of incidents like some of the ones presented here would be proper training and breeding, and people putting more thought into where they get this animal from and who they get it from. Im saving up to buy a blue brindle puppy from one of my old drill seargents, and from him only because I know that his dogs are bred the right way: in a good kennel with high quality, well bred and trained mothers and fathers. The problem comes from people who buy them from some guy down the street who just had a litter.

I got 2 full grown pitbulls and the only thing that they will do is lick you to death IF you walk through the door with myself or someone of the family. My Dogs have only bitten me once and that was when I locked myself out the house after midnight coming home from a shift and I had to go into the back yard and they just bit my ankle till i yelled, they let go and started whimpering and licking me.
Other than barking at the mail man and my dumb loud ass neighbors, and people who speed down my kid filled crowded street
