SPOKANE, Wash. — A 26-year-old Spokane Valley man was shot in the face after scuffling with a police officer sent to check on his welfare early Tuesday, police said.
Ryan L. Patterson was in critical condition after undergoing surgery at a Spokane hospital, said Sgt. Dave Reagan, spokesman for the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating.
Witnesses said the man pulled a weapon on a Spokane Police Department officer who was responding to a call at a north Spokane home shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, Reagan said.
The identity of the officer, a veteran of more than 20 years, was not immediately released.
The man was found lying on the front steps of a home and refused to comply with the officer's orders, Reagan said. The officer attempted unsuccessfully to use a Taser weapon and the man drew a pistol, he said.
The officer fired several shots and one bullet struck Patterson in the jaw. Patterson was taken to Deaconess Medical Center.
The officer was placed on administrative leave, which is routine, while sheriff's detectives investigate.
