GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Peggy Whitted said she couldn't believe what she heard when she answered the phone last Thursday. "He said, 'This is Shea Smith with the Sheriff's Office' and I said, 'oh my goodness,' " Whitted told WYFF News 4's Erin Hartness. Whitted said that Smith then asked her if she knew Eli Pittman. "I said, 'yes sir, he was my granddaddy.' " Lt. Smith's phone call was more than a century in the making. Eli Pittman was shot to death in the line of duty, on April 30, 1906. On the 101st anniversary of his death, Pittman was added to Greenville County's memorial for fallen officers as his family watched. Pittmans granddaughter was at the ceremony. Pittman might never have been added, had it not been for an author researching Greenville County's history for a book. The author sent a letter to the Sheriff's Office saying he discovered an officer had been overlooked on the memorial. Investigators immediately begin checking old records and discovered Pittman had been left off. "We are finally able to say thank you and we are finally able to ensure that his memory will never be forgotten," says Sheriff Steve Loftis. Whitted, Pittman's granddaughter, had heard the story about her grandfather being shot in the line of duty, but wasn't sure if it was true. "I had read in the paper where they honored all the deputies and I didn't see his name so I doubted he was actually a deputy," says Peggy Whitted. Now a family mystery is solved, and a man has been honored for his sacrifice. "He deserved it and he died carrying out his duties," Whitted said. He gave his life for what he thought was right." Loftis said he is sending the author a letter to tell him thank you.
