Suspect allegedly wanted a handout

NEW ORLEANS — An off-duty New Orleans police officer was in stable condition after he was stabbed by a man who asked him and fellow officers for money on Canal Boulevard early Sunday, New Orleans police said.
The victim was stabbed twice in the chest and taken to a hospital. He and the other officers were not identified.
Police booked Willie Price, 41, of New Orleans, with two counts of attempted armed robbery, three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of resisting an officer.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight at Canal and Rosedale Drive as the three officers, none in uniform, were walking to their car from an establishment in the area, Garry Flot, a police public information officer, said.
He said Price repeatedly asked the officers for money and became irate when they refused
Price began fighting with the officers, then produced a knife and stabbed one officer twice, Flot said. He said Price fled on foot. When officers caught up with him at Canal and City Park Avenue, Price and the officers got into a violent struggle before Price was arrested, Flot said. One officer fired his gun during the struggle, but no one was shot.
A knife used by Price was found at the scene, police said.
Price was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
Court records show Price has had four convictions: two for burglary, one for resisting an officer and one for possession of marijuana.
