(AP)WOLFEBORO, N.H. A shoplifter would have to run pretty far to get away from this 70-year-old state liquor store clerk.
Judy Brenner of Brookfield was working at the liquor store in Wolfeboro on Thursday when she thought a customer was trying to lift some liquor.
Brenner, who ran the Boston Marathon this month, went after the teen, discovered he had a half-gallon of whiskey under his jacket and helped detain him until police arrived.
"He didn't run, but he walked faster, so I picked up my pace," Brenner said. "I wasn't going to let him go he didn't pay for that."
She sprinted 100 feet to catch up with the teen, then grabbed the bottle while others who joined in the chase grabbed the suspect.
"I have no problem running fast," Brenner said. She said she ran 14 marathons decades ago and finished the Boston Marathon this month in just over five hours, placing sixth among the women in her age bracket.
"It was a little surprising, but it was a little encouraging too," said Officer Roger Martel, adding that residents should not normally try to apprehend people themselves.
The suspect, Curtis Smith, was charged with theft and unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor.
