Ford Quality on Par with Toyota, Nissan

- Ford Motor Company reduced its corporate TGW rate by 8 percent, bettering the overall industry improvement of 2 percent.

- Six Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles are segment leaders for top quality: Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan in midsize cars; Ford Mustang and Shelby GT500 in sports cars; Ford Expedition EL in large traditional SUVs; and the Lincoln Navigator in large premium utilities.

- The Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion swept the first two spots for TGW leadership in the highly competitive mid-size car segment, which includes the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. At 910, Milan had the lowest TGW level of any Ford product. Fusion recorded 1066 TGW.

- The Lincoln Navigator leads in both TGW and customer satisfaction for the Large Premium Utility category. The Navigator and Expedition EL have customer satisfaction scores of 85 percent, tops among all Ford Motor Company vehicles.

DEARBORN, Mich., April 18, 2007 -- The quality of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles is virtually equal to that of Toyota and Nissan, according to the first quarter 2007 model-year Global Quality Research System (GQRS) report.

Ford, Lincoln, Mercury brand vehicles are at 1456 things gone wrong (TGWs) compared with Nissan at 1457 and and Toyota at 1453 TGWs per 1,000 vehicles.

Our latest performance continues a trend that has seen Ford Motor Company significantly improve vehicle over the last few years" said Bennie Fowler, vice president, Ford Global Quality. "We have more work to do, but there is no question that Ford Motor Company builds world-class vehicles. We can compete with anybody."

Two other company models achieved segment leadership in TGW: the Ford Shelby GT500 (Sports Car) and Ford Expedition EL (Large Traditional Utility). The Lincoln Navigator leads in both TGW and customer satisfaction for the Large Premium Utility category. The Navigator and Expedition EL have customer satisfaction scores of 85 percent, tops among all Ford Motor Company vehicles.

"Our new products are launching with excellent quality, which is the result of improvements in both manufacturing and product development processes," said Fowler. "That proves we're doing the right things."

Honda's 1313 TGW was best in the survey.

First quarter 2007 model-year GQRS data was gathered from customers who registered new vehicles from Sept. 2006 through Nov. 2006 and owned their cars and trucks for three months. The new Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover vehicles and F-Series Super Duty were not included in the research.

GQRS surveys have historically tracked J.D. Power studies.

And still all my young friends say "American cars suck..." and continue to buy Japanese (or German) cars, sending the profits back to the home islands economy.

I predict these "quality assessments" will not be reflected in "Consumer Distorts", the journal of record of the Japanese auto industry. In fact, I expect CR to do for American trucks what they did for American cars, even as Toyota dumps cut-rate full size trucks into the American market. They have even added spiffs to their full size truck line (except the quad cab), something they rarely do for their vehicles.

Do I fault the Japanese? Nope, it's just business and they are competing successfully.

I blame selfish, shallow "Americans" who purchase "big ticket" products from foreign countries. I enjoy Japanese culture as much as the rest of you (sushi, cartoons, movies and cheap consumer electronics), but I don't buy "big ticket" items such as cars, audio/visual equipment or construction equipment from them.

Why? Because of the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen still manning their posts in the Pacific Theater. And no, I will not "let it go". I have worked with, and been friends with, many survivors of both theaters. I will not buy "big ticket" items from Europe, either. Especially not from the slavers at Benz or BMW, the jew-burning bastards.

Hey, it's a free country, everyone may do as they see fit. But, if you expect a warning instead of a gig, you better get stopped by a Japanese or German cop.

All well and good, Nacht, but I don't believe they included the thirty year old Panther platform. Toyota was recall king last year, followed by Honda (Automotive News)...reckon you won't read that in Consumer Distorts. Perception trumps reality...
