Ipswich man sentenced for holdup
By Julie Manganis
Staff writer

SALEM - An Ipswich carpenter was sentenced to state prison yesterday after pleading guilty to the armed holdup of a Rowley convenience store last year.
Taylor Harrington, 21, will serve 21/2 to four years in prison, the result of a plea agreement accepted yesterday by Salem Superior Court Judge Howard Whitehead.
Harrington admitted that on April 16, 2006, he pulled up the hood of a gray sweatshirt, drew it snugly around his face with the drawstring, and then walked into the Richdale store on Main Street with a knife, prosecutor Jean Curran said. He demanded $200 from the clerk. The clerk later said the weapon looked like a steak knife.
As Harrington fled, two kids in the area noticed that he got into a Jeep. Police spotted the Jeep but were unable to stop it. Harrington, who was living at 304 High St. at the time, was later pulled over on Route 1 in Peabody.
Defense lawyer Mark Schmidt said his client had worked for the same Ipswich contractor for three years, while also earning his high school equivalency certificate.
But his "history of rather significant substance abuse" led him to commit the crime, Schmidt told the judge. While in jail, Schmidt said, Harrington has re-established ties to his family and wants to plan his future.
Whitehead told Harrington he could be successful.
"You look like you could do a lot better than you've done," the judge said. "You strike me as fairly intelligent and more alert than many of the people who appear before me."

Good to see he's going to do some time for his Easter Sunday Robbery in '06.
