FALL RIVER - Funding for gang prevention programs in the city has been given the green light by the House of Representatives.
Fall River Democratic Reps. Robert Correia and David Sullivan said an agreement was reached Wednesday morning to maintain funding for the Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Service Initiative Grant for fiscal 2008.
The $11 million grant was originally left out of the House's budget. In reaction, Rep. Stephen Canessa, D-Freetown, filed an amendment asking that $25 million be included for grant funding.
Sullivan said the renewed grant will total $13.5 million - the original $11 million with another $2.5 million reserved for additional police training programs.
Correia said that after discussions with House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi and House Ways and Means Committee chairman Robert A. DeLeo, a compromise was reached to include money in the budget for the grant.
