Anyone else see on the civil service website the "basic recruit acceptance procedure changes for July 2007?" After reading it I would think that the biggest issue, aside from getting a city to sponsor you, would be the cost of the health insurance and long term disability insurance. Anyone know what the ballpark figure would be for a single guy to get health insurance/ long term disability insurance?

Posted by: MPDReserve

I don't know the figure, but I have heard of guys who try to go that way and don't last because the costs are so high. I assume you would have to be wealthy to begin with before considering this option.

You can contact the following for some insurance info

Angela DeVasto adevasto@wolfandco.com

She got me the insurance I needed for the academy.

Couldn't you COBRA from your full time job?

Posted by: Macop

I used COBRA, but it was like 400 a month.

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

Just cancel your insurance after a few weeks in the academy and hope for the best.

Posted by: JoninNH

Thats like parking your uninsured unregistered vehicle in the academy lot... risky.

Posted by: SPINMASS

Yea that would be no good since integrity is such a big part of the academy.

COBRA is for people who have insurance and then leave a job for whatever reason. There are other options for insurance while in the academy that are much, much cheaper than cobra. $150 to 250 per month for a decent plan. PM me if you need info.
