Main Page BOP vs DOC

I just got the word that I start training monday at FMC Devens for the BOP. I know with almost 20 years military(barely made the age limit) that I start w/ extra vacation time and can invest some military time towards retirement. I've also heard that the BOP is a good start if you want to get into ICE, Customs, etc. I also took the latest DOC test. I've heard of guys switching from DOC to the BOP, and vice versa. I wanted some opinions on which one might be the better way to go.

Congratulations..... BOP is the route to go there are definitely more options out there for you

The only good thing about BOP is Glynco training, it is fun. It is very easy too. It is a three week vacation. The white shirt and grey action slacks are not going anywhere. oh yeah, the maroon tie is great. LOL. I did not like working there. In the beginning it was ok. The mandates got out of control, good if you like overtime. This is just my opinion.

DOC is not too shabby pay wise and at some point we will get a raise.

DOC is 1st year = 2 weeks vacation
5th year = 3 weeks
10th year = 4 weeks
20th year = 5 weeks

you can work 20 years and retire from the DOC with 50% of your pay and keep the benefits or stay for 2% every following year for 80% with 32 years service at age 55 or older

we have officers that have retired from the DOC and the military. the 2 pensions look like a nice way to go.

the down side of course is sitting in a cell block for awhile , but at some point you can find a quiet place like Concord farm or Plymouth forestry camp

don't know about the Fed joint. transferring to another agency option sounds nice. the DOC doesn't have that

If you are willing to travel for promotions, BOP is the way to go. Much easier to climb the ladder. Just fyi, although BOP is considered LE (6c), many other federal LE agencies will not recognize it as equivocal training and experience. How dare they? It is still a good foot in the Federally door....though.

The best thing though is that the BOP will throw a person with no correctional experience or training into a housing unit. You will walk in on your first day into a housing unit a they will toss you keys and a radio and say have a good shift, and you are standing there with no clue. BOP is the way to be!!!!! Very safe!!!

No, correctional experience should not count for strictly "police" related law enforcement. I mentioned it for a fyi.....ya know? I have been to FLETC, too. The BOP is not a bad gig for a career or just a foot in the door. IMHO, of course.

I would say BOP would be better for you, especially that you have 20 years federal with the military.

First of all federal officer and everyone that I resigned and never was fired. The place sucks, You can say its a good job federal officer and that is your opinion. I say it is terrible, and who cares even if I did get fired, I still worked there and saw how that place is run. If I could go back I would not do it over again and work at that place. Sorry attleboro didnt work out for you and this is all you got.

Just another MHO.....

I worked at FMC Butner for a bit and not sure how it compares to FMC Devens but as far as Corrections goes, it was tit. They house mostly broke dick cons, btw. Except for the cadre inmates who have a nice stop in the BOP so not much problems from them.

Anywho, good pay and benefits. You bid for shifts/days every six months and get to move around between each shift(mandatory to work each shift in a three year time period). Overtime was abundant but I was never forced, surprisingly. This was all quite nice in comparison to the DOC.
