The Rhode Island Department of Corrections is accepting applications for Correctional Officer Recruit Academy Class #76. for more info:

*Academy: The Academy is a nine-week, non-residential program designed to provide the entry-level Correctional Officer candidate with all the knowledge and skills s/he will need to successfully perform the duties of Correctional Officer in any of the Rhode Department of Corrections secured facilities. Training emphasizes safety, communication skills, defensive tactics, weapons, chemical agents, CPR certifications and departmental policies.

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRAINEE
$32831 - $46568 *
* Upon successful completion of a nine week pre-service training program, appointment to the position of Correctional Officer (40 hr. work week) will be at the annual salary range noted above. During the nine weeks of training, Correctional Officer Trainees will receive a base rate of $500 per week without benefits. Successful completion of the pre-service training program is required to obtain permanent status as a Correctional Officer.
DUTIES: A Correctional Officer is responsible for the supervision, custody, and control of adult inmates incarcerated at the Adult Correctional facilities in Cranston, Rhode Island.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: HS Diploma/GED and employment in a private or public agency involving the supervision of others and the enforcement of rules and regulations; or, a substantially equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be certified as physically and mentally qualified to perform the above duties after passing a physical fitness test, a medical and psychological examination conducted by a licensed physician and psychologist, and pass a comprehensive pre-screening process including a nationwide criminal records check and detailed background investigation.

*Steps to the Academy:
The application process usually takes about four to five months to complete and occurs prior to acceptance into a Correctional Officer Training Academy. The application process includes:
  1. Completing an application for employment
  2. A written examination<LI nd="8">Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) checks
  3. Physical Fitness Test
  4. Background Investigation
  5. An interview with the Director’s Interview Board
  6. Psychological assessment
  7. A Medical/drug screening

Who the hell can live on that kind of salary. come over to mass. doc and you'll make 50,000-60,000 your first year.

The overtime is pretty much limitless!! The salary is really not what their making, just the base!!

Be advised, the RIDOC will be in contract arbitration begining May 22, 2007, with one MAJOR topic...wages. The department is being compared to salaries in MA and CT, and other departments in the country. That is the wages as of now (but like said, the OT is limitless). By July, the salrary should be very similar (if not better) to other DOC's.
