(WBZ) NEWTON For years, the residents of the Hammond Park condo complex in Newton wondered what was happening to some of their most precious belongings.

Jeffrey Pitman, the building's handyman, is now charged with stealing valuables from the people who trusted him.

Many of the victims reported the robberies over the course of three years.

But nothing was done until one resident on the condo board's security committee looked at Pitman's cell phone records and discovered several calls to a local antiques dealer.

"He was always there for me when I needed him," said resident Libby Wolfson.

Police say Pitman was also in Wolfson's condo when she wasn't, rifling through her bedroom dresser, stealing cash and jewelry.

David Schwartz says his grandmother was robbed in 2003 after she died in her unit.

"We can back the day after the funeral and we saw the silverware was gone," says Schwartz.

The items were family heirlooms left to David and his sister.

"She was very proud of having traveled and collected things. These were things she wanted her family to have," adds David.

According to twelve complaints, Pitman sold most of the items to Ruth Feldman antiques in Newton. Feldman says she gave all of Pitman's sales receipts to investigators.

"In my heart of hearts, I just liked him so much, but he has to pay for what he did," said Libby.

Pitman's trial is scheduled to begin May 23.
