WAREHAM — A Wareham Middle School computer teacher has been charged by police with inappropriately touching a female student.
George Fernandes, 55, of Onset has been summonsed to a May 15 arraignment in Wareham District Court, where he will face one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, police and court workers said.
Lt. Irving Wallace said officers began looking into Mr. Fernandes' conduct after receiving a complaint.
"As a result of the investigation, we decided to charge him," he said.
The lieutenant would not comment further on the circumstances behind the allegations.
Mr. Fernandes could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Neither could Wareham Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Collins, who did not return several calls from The Standard-Times to his office and one to his home Tuesday.
The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office confirmed that the summons had gone out, but said it could not provide more information until the matter goes to court.
The Department of Social Services is also involved with the case. Spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said her department's investigation officially began Thursday, but DSS workers could not do much last week because it was school vacation and many potential witnesses were unavailable.
DSS records contain two reports from two different children regarding Mr. Fernandes. Ms. Monteiro said she could not comment on the specifics of the case, but added that two reports usually mean two separate incidents. Both are filed as "inappropriate behavior" with DSS.
The accusations into Mr. Fernandes' conduct first emerged last week when the mother of an alleged victim, a sixth-grade girl, told Boston television channel WHDH Channel 7 that the teacher fondled her daughter under her shirt. Another student saw the groping, said the woman, identified only as "Linda." At the time the story ran, no charges had been filed.
When contacted by The Standard-Times last Friday, Dr. Collins said Wareham Middle School Principal John Amaral was conducting the investigation, set to finish this week. He said he was not familiar with the details of that investigation because Mr. Amaral had not submitted his report.
