DARTMOUTH — The roar of 3,000 motorcycles on the roads in North Dartmouth will signal the start of the fourth annual Poker Run and Pig Roast to benefit cystic fibrosis on Sunday, May 6.
The emphasis is "good, clean, family fun. It won't be rowdy," said Ron Fortier of Dartmouth Building Supply, which will host the non-alcoholic event.
The profile of the average biker who takes part in the CF fundraiser is far from the hell-raising stereotype. Those who have come in the past tended to be 40-plus years old and "very mellow," Mr. Fortier said. "We'll have doctors, dentists and lawyers riding alongside contractors and other trades people."
Still, Mr. Fortier and co-promoter Ron Geary would like to see the Poker Run and Pig Roast become a national draw for bikers who go to big rallies like those in Daytona Beach, Fla., Laconia, N.H., and Sturgis, S.D. This event is the first of the riding season on the SouthCoast and already one of the largest.
Since 2004, the turnout has basically doubled each year. Last year the event raised $70,000 for cystic fibrosis research in memory of Mr. Geary's daughter Jenn Wing, who died from the disease at age 23. That private donation was the 14th largest received by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This year, Dartmouth Building Supply plans to top $100,000 in funds for the charity.
After the bikers assemble for coffee and doughnuts Sunday morning at Dartmouth Building Supply, they will disperse in small groups to complete a 95-mile ride on back roads through woodlands and shorelines.
The exact route, Mr. Fortier said, won't be revealed until the day of the ride. Maps from rides like this, he said, become precious keepsakes and people reuse them because they have been carefully laid out for a combination of scenery, appropriate avenues and convenient stopping places along the way.
Riders who complete all five checkpoints by noon will receive a poker hand when they return to Dartmouth Building Supply. On many poker runs, riders pick up playing cards along the way. However, Mr. Fortier said the method they will use will keep the game "on the up and up" even though all the top hand wins is "bragging rights."

Poker Run & Pig Roast for Cystic Fibrosis in Memory of Jenn Wing

Just Days Until...

The fourth annual event will be held on Sunday, May 6th at Dartmouth Building Supply’s twenty-acre facility offering more than ample cover assuring a rain or shine event.

Sunday, May 6, 2007 - It's Our Fourth Annual Event!

Do to the Overwhelming Response - We CANNOT Guarantee the Availability of Tickets at the Gate on Sunday!

Tickets are no longer available at Sovereign Bank locations. HOWEVER - Honey Dew Donuts and DBS may still have tickets available - Current details

In three years, we’ve raised over $100,000 for Cystic Fibrosis because of your support. Last year $70,000 was raised and the (call us crazy) 2007 goal is $100,000. Why do we do it? It’s all done in the loving memory of one young woman, Jenn Wing, who succumbed to the disease at the young age of twenty-three. Jenn’s dad, Ron Geary, is our Customer Service Manager, “Jenn, as sick as she was, continued with her group of family and friends, Faithful Footsteps for CF, to raise money to fund the research for a cure for the disease that would eventually take her life."
Please lend us your support this year by purchasing a raffle ticket for the 2007 Harley-Davidson or an event ticket or by sponsoring the event. At this writing, we have the support of Sovereign Bank, WHJY, iLevel Truss Joist, Honey Dew Donuts, Thrill City Cycle and Fall River Ford. There's still time for you to join us to make our fourth annual event a huge success.

All revved up for charity

DARTMOUTH — The fourth annual Poker Run and Pig Roast for Cystic Fibrosis on Sunday drew an overflow crowd to the sprawling lumber yard on Reed Road.
More than 2,000 motorcyclists set off in blustery conditions for the 40-mile ride to Sam's Club in Plymouth, and then came back to Dartmouth Building Supply for an afternoon featuring live music, numerous exhibits including a Wall of Death thrill ride and the main event — the renowned barbecue.
"They had a good feed here," said Ted Marvel of New England's Best Pig Picking, the Norton company that handled the catering chores. "We cooked 2,000 pounds of pork today, a whole hog and the rest were shoulders. We did 2,500 pieces of chicken, 800 pounds of potato salad, 800 pounds of coleslaw and about 70 gallons of baked beans. This is our third year down here, and it just keeps growing."
Diners filled long rows of tables arranged along the center of a cavernous shed inside the lumber yard. Tattoos, massages, leather goods and jewelry were among the items on offer from vending booths lining the sides. Southcoast Hospitals Group also sent along a health van to seek blood donors.
The event is entirely alcohol-free, and volunteers staffing the Honey Dew Donuts stand were kept busy all day. Kathy Leaver, part owner of several Honey Dew franchises in New Bedford and Dartmouth, donates all of the proceeds from her booth to the charitable event. Ms. Leaver, who has been involved with the bike run from the its inception, said, "We originally had the idea for this coming back from the bike week in Sturgis, South Dakota."
Ron Fortier of Dartmouth Building Supply is the coordinator of the poker run, which honors the memory of Jenn Wing, late stepdaughter of DBS customer service manager Ron Geary. Ms. Wing lost her battle with cystic fibrosis at age 23.
"Four years ago, we never imagined it could get this big," Mr. Fortier said. "Today we served a meal to 2,800 people in 35 minutes, and I haven't heard one discouraging word."
As awareness of the event has grown, riders from Connecticut and New Hampshire have begun to show up, Mr. Fortier said. With more participants, the amount of money raised also increases, he said.
"Over the last three years, we've raised $107,000, but this year alone we're crazy enough to shoot for $100,000. It looks like we are darn close. But if one cent of what we raise is the tipping point for finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, then we won't have to do this any more."
New England Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light also took part in the event, riding the Patriots Super Bowl custom bike. Another motorcycle, a 2007 Harley Davidson FLHX Street Guide, valued at $20,000, was raffled off. Ticket sales for the raffle were limited to a total of 999 tickets at $50 apiece.
With so many motorcycles on the road logistics have become more complex, Mr. Fortier said.
"Safety is our number one concern so we stagger the start. Otherwise, it's the domino theory on wheels," he said. Likewise, the exact route is disclosed only in the course of the ride to discourage participants from racing.
DBS owner and CEO Joe Delgado, a motorcycle enthusiast, was pleased with the turnout. He made the run on his Harley Road King. "It was a little bit cold but the rain held off and it looks like it's going to be another huge success," he said.
All of the money raised will be presented to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at Roger Williams Park next Sunday according to Mr. Fortier.
