PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Portsmouth police said that they averted a suicidal man's attempts to be shot and killed by officers over the weekend.
According to a police statement, officers received word Sunday that an armed man was en route to Portsmouth Hospital. Officers said that when they caught up with him, he was behaving wildly and shouted at them to shoot and kill him. Police said the man also told them he was armed with a gun and planned to use it.
Officers were able to persuade the man to surrender without using force. They said he turned out not to be armed.
The man's name was not released. Police said he was taken to Portsmouth Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
