FAIRHAVEN — A 14-year-old girl fought off a man who first offered her a ride in his SUV and then tried to grab her near the Pease Park boat ramp early yesterday afternoon, police said.
"She did the right thing," Fairhaven Sgt. Kevin Kobza said. "She broke free and ran away. Our primary concern is for her to get away."
The girl said she was walking north on Middle Street when a man in his early 30s pulled up in a dark, four-door SUV with tinted windows and asked if she needed a ride, according to Sgt. Kobza.
She refused, but the man began following her in his truck. As she neared the parking lot of the Pease Park boat ramp, he pulled in front of her, blocking her way, police said.
The teenager told police the man then got out of his SUV and walked up behind her. He grabbed her by the back of the arm, trying to get her to stop, and said, "Come on and get in my car," police said.
Sgt. Kobza said the girl struck her attacker in the face with a container of milk she was carrying, causing him to let go. When he tried to grab her arm a second time, she kneed him in the groin, the sergeant said.
The man gave up, Sgt. Kobza said, and the girl ran home to report the incident. Officers received the call at about 1:55 p.m.
The sergeant said police have no leads in the case so far, but say the alleged attempted abduction does not seem to be part of any pattern.
"At this point in time, it appears this was an isolated incident," Sgt. Kobza said.
When speaking with Patrolman Edward Riggs, the investigating officer in the case, she described her attacker as a white man, well-built and clean-shaven, with dark blond or light brown hair, wearing denim shorts and a white T-shirt with the sleeves cut off, Sgt. Kobza said.
Additionally, the man was reportedly wearing dark sunglasses, tan boots and a black wristwatch, and had a 1- to 1½-inch scar on his chest.
Sgt. Kobza said the girl did not get the license plate number from her attacker's car.
Anyone with information related to the case can contact police at (50 997-7421.
