Investigators Say Former Auto Shop Worker Sparked Bomb Search

PITTSBURG, N.H. -- A dispute between an auto business owner and a former employee apparently led to a bomb scare in two North Country towns this week.

State police said Christopher Palermo, 30, of Pittsburg, provided the information that led them to evacuate and search Moose Alley Auto, the Pittsburg and Colebrook police stations and Colebrook District Court on Wednesday. Police also were warned several vehicles could be booby-trapped with explosives; the cars were found at the auto shop. No explosives were found.

Palermo has been jailed in Boston since Sunday on charges of kidnapping the owner of Moose Alley Auto, Jonathan Wolfgram, 29. Wolfgram was questioned and gave permission for his property to be searched Wednesday. Both men have criminal records.

No one has been arrested in the bomb scare, but state police Lt. John Scarinza, who heads Troop F, said he hopes to bring charges eventually.

"It created great public alarm and a tremendous law enforcement response to a threat that, in the end, did not exist," Scarinza said.

Palermo is accused of threatening Wolfgram and forcing him to drive him to South Station and buy him a train ticket, so Palermo could escape outstanding arrest warrants. He now faces charges of kidnapping and carrying a dangerous weapon, Boston police said.

Pittsburg police Chief Richard Lapoint said Palermo worked as a carpenter to repair Wolfgram's auto shop after it was damaged in a fatal car crash last November. Palermo also was living on the property.
