A state trooper was injured and a man with gunshot wounds was arrested after a chase and crash early Thursday morning on Interstate 85 in Greenville County.
A report by the Greenville County Sheriffs Office said that LCpl Donnie L. Gilbert, 33, was injured during a scuffle with the driver of a car he had stopped for a traffic violation. There were varying reports of how the officer was injured. Initially it was reported that the trooper had been shot in the hand, but that has not yet been confirmed.
Gilbert said that the driver, Tarrance Derrel Hall, 32, had made an improper lane change. Gilbert has served in the Highway Patrol since 1999. Investigators have not yet determined who fired first, Gilbert or the suspect.
Hall was shot in the chest. He was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital. Investigators said that there was an oustanding bench warrant against Hall for a traffic violation.
Hall is listed as being from Charlotte, N.C. He is expected to recover and will be moved to the Greenville County Detention Center when he is released from the hospital.
According to warrants, Gilbert was dragged by Halls car as Hall attempted to flee.
Gilbert fired several shots into the car, some of which hit Hall in the chest, investigators said. Hall drove away, but was pursued by Greenville County deputies.
Halls car hit a tractor-trailer, spun out of control and hit the median I-85 near Woodruff Road.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, investigators said.
Hall is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon. The warrant specifies that Hall's car is the weapon.
"The main thing is the trooper is OK," Greenville County Sheriff's Lt. Tim Ridgeway told WYFF News 4. The suspect is OK at this point.
Traffic was blocked in the northbound lanes on I-85 near Augusta Road for several hours as officers investigated.
According to the State Law Enforcement Division, Gilbert was treated and released from Greenville Memorial Hospital.
In addition to being charged by deputies, the South Carolina Highway Patrol has charged the driver with failure to stop for a blue light.
For a time, northbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at Augusta Road and back on to the the highway at Laurens Road.
The roadway was reopened by 6 a.m.
