I know this is a silly question, and has probably been covered before, but I can't find any forum on it. What is the S.E.R.T team? How does it differ from the S.T.O.P team, because i konw the S.T.O.P team is the SWAT team. Is S.E.R.T a division of S.T.O.P or what? Thanks guys.

The mission of the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) is to provide requesting agencies with a highly trained and dedicated field force available on short notice for: lost person searches, civil disturbances, special event crowd management, site security or other situations where a cohesive and disciplined unit of law enforcement officers is critical to the success of the mission.

What about the JERK team, anyone heard of them?

I used to be a member of the Special Highway Interdiction Team...

Never been a member, but I'm frequently on that list....

MSP S.E.R.T. (Special Emergency Response Team) Team: Serves as a requestable adjunct to local law enforcement agencies requesting state assistance in civil disturbances, special events, or missing persons searches

SERT is also an acronymn for a military SWAT team.

Posted by: tazoez

Ok, so what is the S.T.O.P. team then? I thought that was what they were.

Posted by: evanbr33

The S.T.O.P. team is the 'Special Tactics and Operations Team' and is essentially the SWAT team for the MA State Police...They assist in the execution of high risk warrants, handle barricaded and hostage situations and provide sniper/counter-sniper support for security operations. SERT on the other hand is utilized more often for search and rescue, civil disturbances, crowd control and other situations which need a highly motivated, disciplined group of Troopers.

Basically STOP gets all the cool guns and SERT gets the stuff that makes them look like a major league catcher..with batons.

i think i saw the S.E.R.T. guys in action once. I was on my way home from a party and decided to take a shortcut through the UMASS Amherst campus. Well I guess this was the same night there football team lost in the playoffs this past year.....I guess they wantewd to be ready. there was a ton of guys in riot gear and enough mounted officers to start a cavalry.

Is it true the last class of troopers were assigned to SERT? I talked to a trooper who graduated the last class and he told me they had no choice because not enough troopers wanted it. He said they kept the stuff in the trunk were on call for any sh!t sandwiches.

Is that SERT or another unit?

Posted by: evanbr33

Negative, members of the 79th are not members of SERT, they are members of the MFF (Mobile Field Force), the two are different from one another. While both have a presence at civil disturbances, SERT features more training/specialization and doesn't typically take Troopers who have less than a year on the job.

That wasnt the SERT team at ZooMASS, that was troopers pulled off the road from the evening and midshift, suited up in the regulation riot gear that we all carry.

Not everyone has that stuff. Every new RTT gets more toys. Some of the older types are lucky they were issued vests.

Posted by: pahapoika

you guys still carry a "Fire Ax" in the cruiser ?

read that in a book a few years ago. sounded like a long list of stuff

Posted by: AFchris77

haha wow. Sounds like there's 8 divisions of the State Police to do 1 job haha. But cant be all bad, the gear and the training must be pretty nice. Let's jsut hope Deval will bounce out another class sometime after September 7th
prolly not tho, i would imagine he's too busy spending $14,000 on curtains for one office, or buying some more caddy's....who knows maybe he's taking some more state police funded Helo rides.....but money for the 80th RTT pffft nooooooo! why would we do that? ass.

I went up to AAA Police Supply in Dedham and was measured for a vest. Second Chance. February of 2005. Still no vest...I do have a nifty halogen mini flashlight, though.

Still wearing my Second Chance issued in 1993.

Second Chance went bankrupt, so you may have a long wait.

Not always true....

Yeah, they went belly-up right after I got measured. I'll bet they got the money for the vest from my department though! I'd ask about it, but the way my job works is that they'd blame me, not the supply section/civilians in charge of the logistics. I really don't want to lose a bunch of vacation days and have a letter in my file. I reckon when I'm motivated, I'll just go buy a new one out-of-pocket. My work right now doesn't put me in a position where a vest is necessary: everybody is dead. If they start shooting, we have bigger problems than vests...

mtc and Deuce: it's a little "gappy" at the sides, but front and back are secure.
