What deputies called a sophisticated marijuana growing and distribution operation in Flagler County was dismantled overnight Tuesday, according to detectives.
The overnight operation ended more than a year of investigation by narcotics agents from Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s St. Augustine Field Office, the Jacksonville Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, the operations was believed to have been headed by brothers Michael Fanelli and Troy Fanelli, and based in Palm Coast.
Authorities said they believed the alleged drug operation had been going operation for the past two years and netted proceeds in excess of $1 million from the sale of high-grade marijuana.
The sheriff's office said the quality of the marijuana is not normally seen and has an estimated street value of $8,000 to $10,000 per pound.
According to the police report, the distribution areas for this elaborate operation included the Jacksonville area.
The report stated that Tuesday’s search warrant netted 300 plants as well as “grow equipment” used for the cultivation and $20,000 in cash. A safe was also taken from a home, officials said.
The investigation began in 2006 after the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said it received an anonymous tip. As the scope of the investigation expanded, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Tri-County Task Force, based in St. Augustine, was brought in to investigate.
“This organized operation is believed to be the largest such operation in Flagler County’s history. It was a very sophisticated operation with the potential of being a far-reaching distribution area,” said Sheriff Donald W. Fleming.
As a result of the investigation, the statewide prosecutor’s office in Jacksonville was contacted because police said the alleged operation spanned two judicial circuits.
A total of four search warrants were issued for three Palm Coast residences and one in Duval County, according to the sheriff's office.
As of noon Wednesday, a total of six individuals were arrested, including the Fannelli brothers.
“This was a joint operation. The cooperation between agencies allowed us to tap in to resources that may not have otherwise been so readily available to the agency. The men and women involved in this overnight operation and the extended investigation are to be commended,” said Fleming.
The investigation is ongoing.
