MONTVILLE, Conn. -- A 61-year-old man serving two life sentences in Georgia has been brought to Connecticut to face charges in an old homicide case in East Lyme.
Jerry Still was extradited to Connecticut on Wednesday and charged with murder in the Starlight Motor Inn.
Charles Eagle was killed in the motel nearly 20 years ago. In November 1988, a maid at the motel entered Room 12 and discovered a mattress that "had been stained with a large quantity of blood," state police said at the time. Two men riding in a Cadillac with a Georgia registration had checked into the motel room.
According to the arrest warrant, Still told family members months after the discovery of the blood that Eagle laid down and closed his eyes, and that's when Still shot him until his gun was empty.
Police said Still then put the body in the trunk of his car and drove back to Georgia. Still said he dumped the body four days later when the smell became overwhelming, according to the warrant.
Although Eagle's body was never discovered, police combined witness testimony and analyzed bloody palms and bone fragments that they say link Still to Eagle's death.
Still was convicted of murder in Georgia in 1989, a relative of Still's told the Hartford Courant. Still was sentenced to life in prison.
Still was being held by state police for an appearance in New London Superior Court.
