MANILA, Calif. — A 23-year-old man was neutralized by police with a stun gun Tuesday evening after a standoff in Manila.
Justin W. Thurlby was hit with the Taser as he emerged from a house on Peninsula Drive after the hour-long incident.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department said Thurlby was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, and would be booked into the Humboldt County Jail, most likely on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Deputies were called to the home just after 7 p.m. by someone inside saying there was a man in the house with knives "going crazy" and threatening to kill themselves or others.
When deputies arrived, they found Thurlby in an agitated state, and at least two people in the home with him.
The Sheriff Department's Special Enforcement Team and officers with the Eureka Police Department and the California Highway Patrol also responded.
At one point, Sheriff Sgt. Diana Freese was able to get into the home and lead the two other people inside to safety.
Thurlby then started talking to authorities, who convinced him to come outside. The Sheriff's Department said the man appeared to be confused about his intentions.
A Eureka police officer used his Taser and incapacitated Thurlby, who was then arrested without any further problems.
