SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) This week, the Springfield police academy is training more than 20 school resource officers on how to keep your kids safe. They took part in a mock school shooting on Wednesday. Several interns serve as hostages and police officers try to take down the shooter. They're learning everything from legal issues to drugs and gangs in schools. “You have to go in…when you see a shooter or hear a shooter…you have to go in and engage. You're not going to find anything as realistic...It gets your heart going, your adrenaline going and everything. It’s scary,” said Troy Hufnagel, Springfield School Resource Officer.
