At around 12:10 Tuesday afternoon, Border Patrol agents working as part of a special task force said they were following a gray, Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Agents said the driver pulled into the parking lot at Alamo Auto Supply on Trowbridge and Gateway West and another man in a green sedan got into the pickup truck and the agents saw the two men transfer a large amount of cash.
"They didn't know at that point what they were observing, but they were following their instinct at that point," said Doug Mosier, public affairs officer for border patrol.
The agents then decided to approach the truck, when they said the passenger in the pickup truck put his hands up as if to surrender to agents. And at the same time he exited the vehicle.
Border Patrol officials said the driver proceeded toward the agents and that's when one of the agents became fearful for his life and pulled out his weapon and started shooting, hitting the truck and the driver in the arm.
Border Patrol said the agent, shooting his weapon is within protocol because he was defending himself.
El Paso police found the truck around 1:30 p.m. at Thomason Hospital.
A witness believes he saw the driver running into the hospital.
"The guy came in holding his arm, his shirt was all bloody, we thought he cut his arm. He went into the information desk and the information lady took him back," said the witness, who didn't want to be identified.
By 2 p.m., law enforcement including Immigration Customs and Enforcement agents and police officers had surrounded the truck at Thomason, while Border Patrol agents put the man being treated into custody.
It is still not known if these men are illegal. It is also not known what exactly the two men were doing exchanging a roll of cash at an Alamo Auto Supply parking lot.
Border Patrol is still investigating the situation and the two men remained in Border Patrol custody Tuesday night.
