well ,well , well ! maybe MCOFU can romance DeVille now and get us a contract.
Dennehy gave all her management cronies big raises , hope there's some money left for the officers.

Deval's 1st good move!

"Patrick spokesman Kyle Sullivan also declined comment, saying the administration does not comment on personnel matters."
Well, so much for an "open" government, as promised during his campaign.

Patrick asks state Correction chief to leave
By Andrea Estes The Boston Globe
Dennehy Correction Commissioner Kathleen M. Dennehy, who was appointed to overhaul the Massachusetts prison system after the slaying of incarcerated priest John G. Geoghan, has been asked to leave her post by the Patrick administration, according to administration sources.
Dennehy, who vowed to create “a more humane system” when she became the state’s first woman prison chief three years ago, remains in the post, but in May will join the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, which has earned headlines for its prisoner chain gangs and television ban. The Patrick administration is conducting a search for her successor, the sources said.
Since Gov. Mitt Romney appointed Dennehy in March 2004, she has been a controversial figure. An insider who worked her way up through the state prison system, she inspired optimism among reform activists who believed she would bring a new openness and crack down on alleged abuse by guards. But she quickly fell out of favor with the union, which accused her of initiating policies that made the job of correction officers more dangerous.
“Her management style has been nothing but abrasive,” said Steve Kenneway, president of the 5,000-member Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union. “Under her leadership, she has alienated the officers and changed policies that we believe will end up getting an officer killed. Morale has never been lower.”
Kenneway pointed to a change in the use-of-force policy, which put new limits on what actions guards could take when provoked, and what he saw as her reluctance to push for prosecution of inmates who assault guards.
The system has also seen a sharp rise in suicides on Dennehy’s watch, leading her to call for a study that recently highlighted serious shortcomings in the state’s handling of at-risk inmates.
Leslie Walker, executive director of Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services, said Dennehy initiated many positive changes, but ultimately was not able to transcend a prison culture that sees prisoners as ”animals.”

When you read some of the past threads by our CO members, you can see what a cancer in the DOC this bag really was. Hopefully changes will come for the better for you guys and gals.

Kennaway didnt make many friends politicaly so I dont think it was his influence as much as it is the fact Patrick wants to put one of his own people in. She was not very good for corrections but hes not much better from what I hear from the state c/o's and the news papers over the years. The down fall of the system is that being a c/o alone is not enough credentials to be commossioner up there. The other problem is that if it were enough credentials it would be scarry because these are the same people that voted a failing eboard back in that is rittled with controversy. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. I'm glad shes gone for the sake of the c/o's but believe me the next one could be worst.

Bristol County C/O's are in for it big time!!!!! They already have one of the worst officer friendly sheriffs around.

All I can say is, "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!" I was OVERJOYED upon hearing the news today.
Cheers to that!

thanks Kozmo.
dennehey was put in office to punish the C/O's for the gagan incident. had we endorsed Romney like the staties , he might have went a little easier on us , not to mention given us a raise , just like the 2 republican governors before him
her ouster is more i believe being appointed by a republican governor and DeVille wants his own people in there .
right now our illustrious eboard is talking 7% over the last 4 years , a signing bonus and no change on the sick leave language.
the state has still not offered anything and hopefully we will go to arbitration soon

Yes she has a job at Bristol county. Great a two headed dragon. All the c/o are not happy because what she did with you all up state. It couldn't get any worse.

Remember that she dont get along with the MCOFU eboard and Bristol is under them. Good luck guys. I think most guys from Norfolk county can tell you how bad that institution went down hill when they brought state people in. Counties dont run the same as the D.O.C and the D.O.C was never a picture of a perfectly run michine and there a reason for that. Its not the c/o's its the mostly the admin up there that dont know what time it is.
On chanell 2 (pbs) they had an inteview with a few people from Romney's corrections Pannel and they said the reason why the union didnt get along with the state is because they were trying to take away some language that was politicaly earned through the unions first eboard. It was also said that the union had to much power back then and some of those favors that were done like the sick time language had to be cut back. If that eboard was so great why do they have to fight so hard. Believe me it was Duval who wants a new Commish and its about what he wants not the union. If they had any drag with the Gov. he would have offered more than a 0-0-0-0-0-7. I try to pay as much attention to all the corrections facilities and unions so I can learn from what they do for future events and from the current MCOFU board I learned not to attack people in the press unless you can back it up. Along with that I learned not to attack politicaly powerfull people that have not done anything wrong to you and I dont mean Romney. They attacked quite a few. Dont slash tires and dont sing dirty Christmass songs out infront of someones home. Dont go through thier trash and dont key thier cars. That lady was horrible for that possition but thing need to be handled proffessionaly not like teenagers.

Correction commissioner hired by Sheriff Hodgson
By Joseph R. LaPlante Standard-Times staff writer
DARTMOUTH — Kathleen Dennehy is leaving her job as Commissioner of the state Department of Correction to take a high-ranking position with the Bristol County Sheriff. Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said this afternoon that he offered the Superintendent of Security Operations position at $110,000 a year to Ms. Dennehy several weeks ago when it appeared the administration of Gov. Deval Patrick may look for a new commissioner. “I’ve followed her career, and she has an excellent reputation,” Mr. Hodgson told The Standard-Times. “She is nationally recognized for her progressive views and she believes as I do in accountability and re-integration in the corrections system.” Ms. Dennehy will begin her new duties on May 7, succeeding Superintendent Peter Peroncelli, who is now preparing the department for national re-accreditation for the House of Correction in North Dartmouth and for the Women’s Center. Mr. Perroncelli plans to retire in December, Mr. Hodgson said. The Superintendent of Security Operations is one of the three top jobs in the department of 524 employees, Mr. Hodgson said.
hate to say it, but Bristol's situation just went from bad to worse.
dennehey hates this MCOFU eboard and with them representing the officers at Bristol it doesn't look good.
the DOC is not out of the woods yet. we could quite possibly go without another contract for 2 more years. at that time there will be another union election and hopefully by then the membership will wake up and at least vote out half of these incompetents.
it's a shame the Bristol sheriff has snowed the people of that county with his media antics.wish you guys could generate some decent PR and get the good citizens on your side.
the governor is still new and he still might come through , although his loyalties seem to be on the other side of the bars.
maybe when some of these young guys realize their not going anywhere , they'll get active or at least send in the damn ballot the next election.
to my brother county officers , be safe and good luck with that witch !
( or maybe she's just lonely and you could find a brave soul to take one for the team )

Wow! I thought our situation in Essex County with our inmate loving, anti law enforcment Sheriff Cousins was bad but Bristol just got nuked with that news. All these republican Correctional admins and County sheriff's want to do is blame the CO's for the high cost of housing inmates. Blame the CO's when an inmate hangs it up. blame the CO's when an inmate gets a little banged up due to CO defending himself from a assault. Here in Essex, Cousins claims to be a republican but believe me hev is by far the most liberal inmate hugging freak in Corrections in the state. I've seen guys get written up for swearing at an unruly inmate. You cant look at them the wrong way anymore without being Written up. Their freaking cons. be nice to them, give them an inch and they will take complete advantage of you and the system. every CO knows this. The problem is, most of these political hacks who kepp getting elected or apointed have never been a CO or in our case in Essex have come to the job with absolutly no Corrections or law enforcment at all.
