A man was shot and killed on Monday while scuffling with a University of Pennsylvania police officer, police said. The man was trying to take the officers gun when it discharged, striking him in the abdomen, police said. The incident began when two security guards witnessed the man breaking into a car at the University of Pennsylvania garage at South 33rd and South streets, police said. The guards called police because they believed the man was armed with a gun, police said. The man then carjacked the driver of a white van and drove a few blocks before crashing into other cars at South 40th and Spruce streets, police said. The man jumped out of the vehicle and was pursued by University of Pennsylvania police. The man got into a scuffle with one of the officers and tried to take the officer's gun, police said. The gun went off, striking the suspect in the abdomen, police said. Authorities said they found the man's gun in the white van. Police did not release the mans name.
