San Diego police said the suspect was struck by at least three cars.

Police are investigating a fatal collision on Interstate 5, causing a traffic nightmare for commuters traveling through downtown San Diego.
Police said a man tried to walk across the freeway just south of Sassafras Street at about 5 a.m. He was hit by at least three cars in the right lanes of northbound I-5 and died at the scene from his injuries, NBC 7/39 reported.
Two of the drivers who hit the pedestrian stopped. One told police that he was traveling at about 50 mph when he saw a man walk into traffic. The driver said he swerved but hit the man with his right front bumper.
Police shut down all but the two left lanes of northbound I-5 during the investigation. Medical examiner's technicians were at the scene gathering evidence, NBC 7/39 reported.
The investigation caused northbound traffic to back up up past the S-curve in downtown San Diego, NBC 7/39 traffic reporter Jason Austell reported. He suggested that commuters heading north on I-5 detour around the traffic jam by taking Interstate 15 or Interstate 805 north to Interstate 8. They can then take I-8 east to rejoin I-5.
